Very high bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line
ITU G.993.1 - VDSL
ITU-T G.993.2 - VDSL2
2 Signal Level Guide
2.1 ADSL
Downstream SNR = 15 dB.
Higher is better, minimum = 6 dB.
Downstream Power = < 15 dBm.
Lower is better.
Upstream SNR = 10 dB.
Higher is better.
Upstream Power = < 15 dBm.
Lower is better.
Downstream Attenuation = < 30 dB
Lower is better, maximum = 60 dB.
Upstream Attenuation = < 30 dB
Lower is better, maximum = 60 dB.
2.2 ADSL2+
Downstream SNR = 06 dB.
Higher is not better, within range is better = 05 - 07 dB.
Downstream Power = < xx dBm.
Lower is better.
Upstream SNR = 06 dB.
Higher is not better, within range is better = 05 - 07 dB.
Upstream Power = < xx dBm.
Lower is better.
Downstream Attenuation = < 22 dB
Lower is better, maximum = 22 dB (for 10mbps), 12 dB (for ~25mbps).
Upstream Attenuation = < 22 dB
Lower is better, maximum = 22 dB (for 10mbps), 12 dB (for ~25mbps).
3 VPI/VCI ( IMPORTANT ) - Failing to adhere modem won't dial
For Streamyx, VPI = 0 , VCI = 35
Belkin Modems = VPI = 0 , VCI = 35 ( defaults at VPI = 0 , VCI = 38 )
Thomson Modems VPI/VCI = 0.35 ( default at 8.35 )

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CASE STUDIES :
DSL Status: UP
DSL Modulation Mode: GDMT
DSL Path Mode: FAST
Downstream Rate: 1024 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 512 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 22 db <-- 13yrs old telephone line
Upstream Margin: 8 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 54
Upstream Line Attenuation: 31
Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0
PVC Connection
Connection: 1
Encapsulation: RFC 2516 PPPoE
Multiplexing: llc
Qos: UBR
Pcr Rate: 0
Scr Rate: 0
Autodetect: Disable
VPI: 0
VCI: 35
Enable: Yes
PVC Status: Applied -- OK
Solution : Now the DS Margin is 22dB and you're able to get 1024 / 512.. old telephone cables do give problems if they deteriorate too badly.. check and see if the cables connecting to the socket/ junction box that you plug your phone line in, are they black in color due to being struck by lightning often ? If they are, try to cut off the carbonised section and connect back using the section which is in good condition.
